The first meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit of John Rooney Post #55, was held at the courthouse in the fall of 1920. The charter was obtained from Indianapolis, July 27, 1923. The Auxiliary sponsors a junior girl for Girls State, assists with the Pender Betterment Group’s Halloween party.
Members participate in the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Services. Auxiliary members and a VFW Auxiliary member place small American flags and Poppy Crosses at area Cemeteries, The group assists the Veterans with placing large flags at Rose Hill Cemetery.
The American Legion Auxiliary assists with many community activities, including blood bank, kiddie parades, farm safety day, snacks for teachers during American Education Week, Children’s video’s for the hospital, Pot luck dinners for visiting Veterans from the Norfolk home, Bingo and Treats at the Veterans home in Norfolk.
