The Pender Community Hospital Auxiliary was organized in June of 1955.
The Auxiliary’s main purpose is to support Pender Community Hospital by raising funds and providing needed equipment and comfort items for patient care. The Hospital Auxiliary has had a membership of strong and willing volunteers, providing thousands of dollars for items to aid in patient care and comfort.
The auxiliary meets the second Tuesday of December, March, June, and September. Members pay annual dues of five dollars. They supply the gift case in the hospital lobby, of which the Auxiliary donates all items. They have also organized the community blood drives in Pender for the Siouxland Blood Bank. The Auxiliary sponsors a Fun Run in June during the Pender Alumni weekend. In the past the Auxiliary has held style shows, pancake feeds and soup dinners as fundraisers. More recent Auxiliary fundraisers include a golf tournament held each July, the annual cookie walk in December, and a memorial Christmas tree in the hospital lobby. Donors to the past years’ memorial tree receive an ornament with which to remember their loved one. Each year the Auxiliary donates and presents a gift basket to the first baby born in the New Year at Pender Community Hospital.
Some of the items the Auxiliary has donated to the hospital in the past ten years include: scales, seven hospital beds, a defibrillator, C Pap and Bi Pap respiratory machines, wheelchairs, pulse oximeter machines, neonatal machines, hospital corridor railings, comfort chairs, patient room recliners, blood pressure monitors, bedside tables, two blanket warmers and a prenatal case cart. Auxiliary contributions paid for the refurbishment of the family waiting room in the hospital. The Auxiliary also purchased an ice machine and provided funds to refurbish a room at Pender Care Centre.
The Auxiliary has over fifty members. Many of these members are long standing members, and recently several hospital employees, realizing the importance and value of Pender Community Hospital Auxiliary, have added their memberships.
The Auxiliary is very thankful for all donations that it receives, be they from individual memorials, blankets from sewing groups, or contributions from PEO, Girl Scouts, or other organizations and individuals.
