Gene Rissell, 79

Gene A. Rissell, 79, of North Sioux City, S.D., died Monday, April 3, 2017 at his residence. 

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, Iowa. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Gene Austin Rissell was born June 19, 1937 in Pender, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Morell) Rissell. He grew up in Pender, graduating from Pender High School, and joined the Navy and served from 1955 until 1959. 

Gene married Bonnie McGinnis in 1966. Together, they made their home in Sioux City, Iowa. Bonnie died on April 19, 2006. 

Gene worked at Container Corporation of America for over 32 years. He was a longtime member of the Sioux City Baptist Church and the Siouxland Senior Center. 

Gene was very active and loved to fish, golf, dance, play horseshoes, go bowling and was a big Nebraska Cornhuskers and St. Louis Cardinals fan. 

Gene is survived by his daughter, Pam Rissell of Sioux City, Iowa; stepchildren Linda Conner of Sioux City, Iowa, Cathie Shafer of San Antonio, Texas, Janice Clay of Sioux City, Iowa, Rick (Jeanne) Clay of Omaha, George Clay of Sioux City, Iowa, Ed Gurnsey of Greeley, Colo., and Doug (Kathy) Gurnsey of St. Angelo, Texas; grandchildren Randi Fields, Mark Fields, Saniyya McClendon and numerous other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister Janice Sindelar of Beemer; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bonnie, stepdaughter Beth Gurnsey, grandson Shane Clay and brother-in-law Delaine Sindelar.
