Ruth Suhr, 98

Ruth Suhr, 98, of Bennington died Tuesday, June 6, 2017.  

Services were held Saturday, June 10, 2017 at St Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson.

Ruth (Surber) Suhr was born September 7, 1918 near Emerson, the daughter of Roy and Anna (Heckens) Surber. She attended schools in the Emerson area and graduated from Emerson High School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Emerson.   

Ruth was united in marriage to Darold Suhr on February 16, 1941 at St. Luke Lutheran Church. Three sons were born to this union. 

They made their home on farms in the Emerson area. They moved to a farm near Pender in 1967. In 1988, they moved into Pender. Darold died on September 22, 2008. 

Ruth was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and a member of the Altar Guild.  

Ruth is survived by her sons, Delwin and Leslie Suhr of Pender, Gene Suhr of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Kenneth and Denise Suhr of Elkhorn, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Anna; husband Darold; sisters Leona Suhr, Blanche Jensen and Ila Esch; brothers Ervin, Howard, Ray and Merrill; and a great-grandson, Evan Heyen.

 

Iona Roth, 101

Iona Roth, 101, of Wisner died Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Wisner Care Center.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point. Interment was in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Pender.

Iona I. (Wascher) Roth, was born July 18, 1915 to Ernst and Bertha (Zipf) Wascher at Beemer. She lived with her parents on a farm three miles south of Beemer during her childhood.

Iona received her education at the Immanuel Lutheran School near Beemer and later received her high school diploma after taking an extension course from LaSalle University in Chicago, Ill.

Iona was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Beemer. In this same church, she was married to Ervin R. Roth on January 1, 1939.

After their marriage, they lived on a farm southwest of Bancroft until 1944. They then moved to the Pender area and later purchased a farm eight miles north of Beemer in 1945.

The Roths were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Bancroft and then St. John’s Lutheran Church of Pender, where all of their children were confirmed. Iona was an organist, Sunday school teacher and chairwoman of the Ladies Aid.

After moving to Omaha, Iona joined Bethany Lutheran Church, its Library Guild and served as treasurer and chairwoman. At present, she held a membership at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in West Point and had been a member of L.W.M.L.

Iona was also a member of the Red Cross, holding the office of chairwoman and treasurer, volunteered at the hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include her children, Betty (Melvin) Wilson of Wayne, Raymond (Bonnie) Roth of Omaha, Shirley (Don) Paulsen of Silver Creek, Terry (Lynette) Roth of Pender, Lyle Roth of Wisner and Karen (Byron) Cruse of Lincoln; sister-in-law-Delores Hunt of Emerson; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Iona was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin in 1964, brothers Herbert and Edgar Wascher and sisters Hattie Brockmann, Golda Leimer, Eveline Ott, Viola Kuester and Zeola Roth.

 

Kevin Wagner, 42

Kevin Wagner, 42, of Hickman died Wednesday, June 7, 2017. 

A funeral service was held Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln. Burial was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Pender. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Kevin was born December 7, 1974 in Lincoln to Wayne and Edna (Bates) Wagner. He was baptized December 29, 1974 and confirmed March 19, 1989 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Pender. 

Kevin graduated from Pender High School in 1993 where he played football, wrestled and ran track. He attended college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. 

On October 21, 2000, Kevin married Tanya Maring at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa. They had two daughters together, Madelynn and Aubrey. Kevin and his family were members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

Kevin opened Paradise Pool & Spa in 1999 and was the owner until his death. He was a member of the Hickman Rural Fire Department and served as assistant chief for the past two years. He enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, running and Nebraska football, Chicago Blackhawks hockey, Chicago Bears football and Boston Celtics basketball. He was always smiling, crossing the line and making everyone laugh. 

Kevin is survived by his wife, Tanya, and daughters Maddy and Aubrey of Hickman; mother Edna Wagner of Pender; sister Sheri (Dan) Johnson of Thurston; aunt Judy (Glen) Cleveland of Meadow Grove; uncle Wayne (Susan) Bates of Mesa, Ariz.; two nephews, one niece and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Wagner, infant brother Scott Wagner, grandparents Harold and Hertha Wagner and Don and Gladys Bates and uncle Francis Bates.

 

Cole Esser, 25

Cole Grant Esser, 25, died Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev.

Cole was born December 10, 1991 to Mary Kay and Mark Esser. He graduated from Omaha Northwest High School. He was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. 

Cole loved to play video games and watch movies. His favorite places were his home and Gamestop.

Cole was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) on December 29, 2016. He was a strong fighter and carried a positive attitude throughout his battle with cancer. It was unlike him to complain about any treatment, even though he hated needles. 

Cole is survived by his mother, Mary Kay; brother Dallas; grandfather Roy Kai; uncle and aunt Kent and Jill Lysgaard; uncle Mike Kai; cousins Jake and Alyse Lysgaard; and father Mark Esser and his extended family. 

Cole was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bev Kai, grandfather Eugene Esser and uncles Jay Kai, Michael Esser and Matthew Esser.
