No place like home: Former Homer principal returns as superintendent
Gregg Cruickshank
Gregg Cruickshank

As it turns out, you can go home again. At least that's the case for Gregg Cruickshank and his wife Linda.

The former Homer Community School secondary principal (1997-2004) has accepted a position as the district's superintendent after a hiatus working as a school administrator in Southwest Iowa.

“After 13 years, I'm back in the area and back at home,” Cruickshank said.

The couple made the move to Iowa to be closer to family, but their careers brought them back to Northeast Nebraska.

Cruickshank is excited to be back at Homer and observe the changes over the last several years.

“I'm going to do a lot of listening, observing and asking questions,” he said. “I'm taking an open-minded approach.”

Homer Secondary School will be moving toward a 1:1 ratio of laptops to students within the upcoming school year and Cruickshank wants to see that progress continue.

“Technology is now so vital to learning,” he said. “The brick and mortar structure is just a place to facilitate learning. Learning can be done anywhere and that connection is often through technology.”

Cruickshank also wants to explore more opportunities for students with Northeastern Community College and Wayne State College.

Primarily though, Cruickshank will be spending his first six months getting reacquainted with his former surroundings.

“The most important thing as a new superintendent is to have your eyes and ears open and to interject your thoughts when appropriate.”
