The South Sioux City school board approved the tax resolution for the 2017-2018 school year at their meeting on Oct. 9. The new tax rate will be 1.191044 percent, down from last year's rate of 1.194414.
This means a home in South Sioux City worth $100,000 would pay $1,191.04 to the school district as part of their taxes.
The board also approved an amendment to the bid on the middle school auditorium which would add $19,325 to the contract to fix the catwalk above the auditorium in the name of safety and increased savings on heating and cooling. The plan would add better barriers to the catwalk to reduce the chance of falling.
The board also recognized Michelle Helt for winning Nebraska Teacher of the Year. Helt is a third grade teacher at Cardinal Elementary in South Sioux City.
The board also recognized students that recently participated in a digital citizenship symposium where the kids learned about cyberbullying, online safety, and how to behave in a digital environment. The kids plan to share their experiences with the rest of the district during the school year.
The meeting adjourned with members going into closed session.
