It snuck up on me, too!

Holiday weeks are always sort of weird. None weirder, though, than when they fall on a Tuesday.

I think we can all relate. You come out of a weekend, maybe work a day (unless you were lucky enough to take Monday off) and then you’re off another day. And then you work a few more days and another weekend shows up.

I think it’s fair to say it won’t be the most productive week in these United States this year. Hard to get a rhythm going.

For us in the weekly newspaper industry, it’s particularly strange. The paper printed at the normal time this week, but most of it was put together a day early and with one less day to devote to it (that’s why it’s so thick). It’s also a slow news week as a result. Any way you look at it, it was a strange week. Very weird.

And then on Monday, it got really weird. My wife was here, like all day. Working.

If you saw the front page story, read her column there just above mine or maybe have heard through the grapevine that this was on the horizon, then you know that she’s winding down her longtime day care business in Pender and is going to come on full-time at The Pender Times and the Dakota County Star.

It has been a long time coming, as she wrote, and it snuck up on both of us. Fifteen years is a lot of time to devote to something, and she spent the bulk of it raising our children at home and helping to raise dozens of others over that time, too. I have no idea how many there were, but I’m sure if we started adding it up we might hit 100 kids. It’d be close.

The plan was always to have her come on board once our youngest child made it to kindergarten, and that will be happening shortly once the 2017-18 school year starts. The timing really couldn’t have been better, either, because with Mark Vrbicky getting the wonderful phone call that his wife, Bonnie, was accepted into a physician assistant’s program at the University of Nebraska in Kearney, we were already going to be down a staff member. There was truly no time like the present for this to begin.

Jen is going to be doing a lot for us as we rotate some duties and reorganize. Advertising sales will be among them, and I can’t wait for someone to tell her, “No.” (That’s a joke, of course.)

It’s a new chapter, and one that will be exciting to watch unfold. We both appreciate all of the opportunities that Pender has afforded us and look forward to serving you for many years to come.
